How to write a Shopify product description from the facts you already have
By Bold Shelf · 1 min read · October 20, 2026

You probably already know everything a shopper needs to hear about your product. The trick is putting those facts in an order that's easy to read. Here's a simple way to do it.

Product Description Writing Worksheet
Turn the facts you already know into a clear, helpful product description.
Start with what you already know
Before you write a single sentence, gather the facts. Most makers have them scattered across labels, notes and supplier emails.
Facts to gather first
- What it is and what it's made of
- Size, weight or volume
- Scent, color or finish options
- Care or use instructions
- Anything that makes it yours (small batch, hand-poured, local materials)
Put the facts in a helpful order
Shoppers skim. Lead with what the product is and why someone would want it, then move to the details.
A simple three-part shape
- One or two sentences on what it is and how it feels to use
- A short list of key details
- Care, sizing or shipping notes
Before and after
Before: Candle. Soy. Lavender. 8 oz. 40 hr.
After: A calming lavender candle, hand-poured in small batches with soy wax. 8 oz, with roughly 40 hours of burn time.
Keep it honest and specific
Only describe what you can stand behind. Specific details ("8 oz amber jar") build more trust than big claims ("the best candle ever").
Tip
If you're unsure about a detail, leave it out until you can confirm it. You can always update the listing later.
Check it before you publish
Read the description out loud once. If a sentence feels awkward to say, it will probably feel awkward to read.
